The Passion Paradox: A Guide to Going All In, Finding Success, and Discovering the Benefits of an Unbalanced Life

The coauthors of the bestselling Peak Performance dive into the science behind passion, revealing the ways in which passion is a double-edged sword and offering a plan for following your passion without ruining your life.

Common advice is to find and follow your passion. A life of passion is a good life, or so we are told. But it's not that simple. The same drive that fuels breakthroughs - whether they're athletic, scientific, entrepreneurial, or artistic - can be every bit as destructive as they are productive. Yes, passion can be a wonderful gift, but only if you know how to use it. If you're not careful, passion can become an awful curse, leading to suffering and burnout.Â

Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness once again team up, this time to demystify passion, showing readers how they can find their passion, sustainably harness its power, and avoid its dangers. They ultimately argue that passion and balance - that other virtue touted by our culture - are incompatible, and that to find your passion, you must lose balance. And they show how to develop the right kind of passion, the kind that lets you achieve great things without ruining your life. Swift, compact, and powerful, this thought-provoking book combines captivating stories of extraordinarily passionate individuals with the latest science on the biological and psychological factors that give rise to passion.

This book will resound well with those infused with passion, teaching them about this feeling and how to recognize it, temper it, and cultivate it effectively without giving it vent to consume us. There are parts where personally it was difficult to face truths about my own passions. Brad and Steve are prime coaches for dealing with these at times harrowing discoveries. All told, a masterful look at an aspect needed in very healthy doses in today's world. Bravo, gentlemen!

I had this book on my radar after thoroughly enjoying Peak Performance. The authors have created another excellent work here. The research and advice that they present is very insightful and is unlike other books I’ve read on high performance and single-minded pursuits of excellence. The prose is very clean and direct. There is something here for everybody, no matter where your interests lie.

Practical examples, tips, practices and snips of great, solid, masterfully written information.

I feel comfortable recommending this little book more for it being a trigger to make one think than any specific advice it gives. Don’t get me wrong. There is specific advice and it’s worthwhile but we’re in a one size never fits all situation where thinking of what the authors’ research has turned up will likely improve your thinking about dedication to task (or career or anything) more than the specifics of what’s worked well for others or what the authors view as general case recommendations. The book starts out with the ‘famous folks who’ve done this’ routine which tends to put my fur up. It’s a variant of the “defer to authority” fallacy. Soon, however, they leave a good deal of that behind and instead go into the meat of the book which tries to advise on how to live a balanced goal oriented life. The key is not just balance but what to focus on as a goal. Do you wish an Olympic gold medal? The key may be not to focus on being on the podium but something else. Not surprisingly, the book is oriented toward athletics which makes sense. After all, that’s where even common weekend athletes wish to improve to the point of excelling. The book reads well – the authors know how to write with an upbeat faster pace which squeezes all the filler and/or boring pointless diatribes. I laughed out loud (at the doctor’s office!) at the authors pointing out what the Buddha called the hedonic cycle. That one sentence is worth the cost of the book as well as the time to read it. I will remember it forever.

Written by coaches and trainers Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness, The Passion Paradox is a self-help book that explores, as the title indicates, the double-edged sword of passion: It can be a great motivator, but it can be a dead-end leading to burnout, delusions, and escapism. How does one harness passion effectively? How does one balance passion with discipline and structure? What is the difference between passion based on the ego’s insecurities and passion based on the intrinsic joy of one’s craft? The author’s explore these questions in an easy-to-read self-help format with a review section at the end of each chapter. In this book you will find the etymology of passion in terms of its historical meaning in religion, its biological foundation (dopamine), and its correct application in the context of self-determination theory, as presented by psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan. Those looking to hone their passion for their career, art, or other endeavors will find this a very useful and meaningful book. I recommend as a supplement to The Paradox Passion two books by Cal Newport: So Good They Can’t Ignore You and Deep Work.

To me this book is full of common sense because it has been the way I conduct my life since youth. I found this more of a reminder of how passion can be either fulfilling or destructive. The reminders in the margins are excellent and the conclusion chapter is really what the book is about in two-pages.EXAMPLES of REMINDERS:- "The best route to making your passion a bigger part of your life is to do so gradually."- "Someone who embodies the mastery mind-set judges herself not on whether she accomplishes her goal but rather on how well she executes on her process."MY UNDERSTANDING:The sentences below sums up what this book is to me and not necessarily what was exactly said or meant in the text:- Pursuing an interest and becoming a successful master (or mistress) requires being intrinsically motivated to achieve results rather than being externally motivated on reaching the goal. In other words, satisfaction and passion must come from within otherwise it can become toxic.- One must be self-aware and re-evaluate their passion.- Pursuing a passion means life is unbalanced by default but if we look at our entire life as a whole, we are usually balanced.- We must be patient and keep striving toward our passion to achieve success.- Some of us may have many passions and choose to re-evaluate where we are at different times in our lives so as to re-direct our passions.- What helps us to achieve the life we want is to think about death, This helps us realize there is only so much time that we have so we should be doing what moves us.- There is a fine line between passion and obsession. In summary, this felt like a pep-talk and a reminder of how I already live. I was not personally enlightened although I did appreciate the inspiring notes in the margin.

Most books tell you to follow your passion. the money will follow. this book urges caution in following your passion as it often results in the elimination of everything else of importance in your life. IT cautions us against being obsessive and alerts us to the role fear plays in our life.In a world whereto are measured by your successes, this book gives you a few moments of trying to have a balanced life and not live your life on the need for the renewal of the feelings of dopamine the we get during the chase.I read it in doctors' offices and in transit and found it helpful and clarifying. I recommend it.
